About this page
Toes on the line, eyes forward, the whole Squad is ready to run. Page 60 closes Chapter 4 with a burst of energy, because all the careful planning is finally done. They chose their tools, practiced their methods, promised to be kind and safe, and now the real data hunt can begin. It is a great moment to name for kids: getting ready is not the boring part before the fun, it is what makes the fun work. Moments like this one show how research becomes an active, screen-free STEM adventure that children can feel in their whole body.
The research skill
Standardizing the starting conditions is what this starting line is really about. All four explorers crouch at the same mark under the Start banner and checkered flag, so no one gets a head start and the race is fair. In research, a study's protocol spells out where, when, and how each trial begins, and Chapter 4 ends with that plan locked in. Once data collection starts, changing the rules halfway would muddle the results. Kids see this principle on field day, and later in lab reports that list conditions before results.
Try it at home
Hold a fair-start race with toy cars or balls down a hallway. Mark a starting line with tape or string and a finish line a few steps away. First, let your child launch two cars from wherever they like and see which "wins." Then line both up exactly on the tape and release them on the same count of three. Talk about which race felt fairer, and why. Before the last round, have your child say the plan out loud: same line, same count, same push.
