About this page

Every research project begins with a name on the cover, and this book is no different. Here your child meets the whole squad at once, four friendly faces playfully hiding behind big bubbly letters, and gets to claim the book as their own by coloring the very first page. That small act of ownership matters. Researchers put their names on their work, and so does your little one. It is a gentle welcome to the journey that starts in Chapter 1, where wondering about the world becomes an adventure worth following.

The research skill

Look at the line under the bubbly title: Written by, and Colored by YOU. That is authorship, the habit of saying clearly who made a piece of work and who helped. Real researchers list every contributor on the first page of a paper, and in school your child will soon write a name on every worksheet and project. A title page is a small promise that someone stands behind the work inside. Starting a book about research this way, with the reader credited as co-creator, sets the tone for everything that follows.

Try it at home

Make a title page for something your family did together this week, such as a block tower, a batch of pancakes, or a walk around the block. Fold a sheet of paper in half and help your child write or dictate a name for the project across the top. Underneath, list everyone who helped and what each person did: "Maya stacked, Dad held the base." Let your child decorate the edges, then keep it with a photo or drawing of the finished project. Ask who should get credit for which part.

Talk about it while you color

  • Which of the four friends peeking out from the letters would you want as your best friend, and why?
  • If you wrote a book, what would you put on the cover?
  • What do you think these four friends are about to go do together?
