Chapter 2: The Library of Leaves
Subby Scans Coloring Page
"Subby helps find the most important words."
Subby the Robot scanning a book page with a laser beam; digital sparkles are floating in the air.
About this page
Sparkles fill the air as Subby sweeps a gentle beam across a book page, hunting for the most important words. This scene gives children a friendly picture of how technology can help with a mountain of reading, by pointing us toward what matters most. Notice that Subby finds the words, but the squad still decides what to do with them. That balance, tools assist and people think, is the healthy framing behind introducing kids to AI through Subby the Robot. The glowing beam and floating sparkles also make this one of the most fun pages to color creatively.
The research skill
Subby's beam sweeps across an open book while sparkles and numbers float up, which captures skimming and scanning: moving quickly over a page to find the words that matter most, instead of reading every line. Researchers scan titles, headings, and bolded words before deciding what to read carefully. Chapter 2 is about gathering what is already known, and scanning keeps that job manageable. Your child will use this skill in school to find answers in a passage, and later to search indexes and tables of contents.
Try it at home
Open a favorite picture book and choose one target word that appears several times, like "moon," "bear," or the main character's name. Show your child what the word looks like, and write it on a slip of paper they can hold. Then become the scanning robot together: your child sweeps a finger across each page, beeping every time the word appears. Keep a tally on the slip. For pre-readers, pick a word with a distinctive shape or first letter, and celebrate each find.
Talk about it while you color
- What color do you think Subby's scanning beam should be?
- If Subby scanned your favorite book, what important words do you think it would find?
- What do you think the sparkles feel like if you could touch one?
