Chapter 2

The Library of Leaves

Reading, searching for existing knowledge, and using research tools

Before a scientist runs a single experiment, they find out what other people have already discovered. That is the big idea of Chapter 2. Across pages 11 through 25, wise Professor Hoot leads the friends into the Library of Leaves, where every leaf on every tree holds something someone once learned.

This is the longest stop before the experiment begins, and for good reason. Kids color scenes of searching shelves, reading together, taking notes, and a late night study session. Without ever using the phrase "literature review," the chapter plants the idea behind it: smart researchers build on what came before. One page even shows the friends climbing onto the Giant's Shoulder, a nod to the famous saying about seeing further by standing on the shoulders of giants.

Parents and teachers can bring this chapter home with one simple habit: when your child asks a question you cannot answer, look it up together and talk about where the answer came from. Librarians love this chapter because it treats the library as a place of adventure rather than homework. By the final page, kids understand that finding out what is already known is not cheating. It is how every discovery begins.
