Everything we learn connects to what people already know, and every new discovery, even a tiny one, adds a piece the world did not have before. For a child, the message is empowering, your questions matter and your answers belong on the wall too. It echoes the encouragement in Professor Hoot's library guide, that even the youngest learners contribute something real.
The research skill
Curious Bunny fits the missing piece into a giant world map puzzle, which shows how a new finding fits into what is already known. Before researchers add something, they look at the whole picture to find the gap their work fills. That is why Chapter 2 spends so much time reading first. The big map is mostly finished by other people, and one piece is left for the squad. In school, this becomes connecting new learning to what the class already knows, and later, explaining why a project matters.
Try it at home
Take out a simple jigsaw puzzle your child knows well and quietly remove one or two pieces before they start. As the puzzle comes together, let them discover the gap. Ask what the missing piece should look like, using the pieces around it as clues: its colors, its edges, the part of the picture it belongs to. Then reveal the piece and see whether their description matched. No puzzle at home? Draw a simple picture, cut it into six pieces, and hide one.
