About this page

Meet the squad's friendly helper. This round little robot with a heart on its tummy screen represents something modern kids will grow up alongside, technology that supports our thinking without replacing it. Notice the story's careful wording, Subby helps us organize our big ideas. The ideas still belong to the child. That is a healthy first lesson about tools and helpers of every kind, and it is exactly the conversation we explore in Subby the Robot and introducing AI to kids. While coloring, children can decide what color a kind, helpful robot should be, which is a delightful question all by itself.

The research skill

Subby rolls in with a heart on its screen and a clear job: helping organize ideas. The research skill is grouping, gathering loose thoughts into sensible piles so patterns become easier to see. Chapter 1 is about noticing and wondering, and a curious child soon has more questions than they can hold in their head at once. Sorting those ideas is how researchers turn a messy notebook into a plan. At school it looks like graphic organizers, word sorts, and grouping pictures before writing a story.

Try it at home

Ask your child to name eight things they wonder about, and write each one on a scrap of paper or sticky note. Anything counts: why the moon changes, where the cat sleeps, how bread gets holes. Then play "helper robot" together. Your child moves the notes into groups that feel like they belong together, such as animals, sky, and food. Ask them to explain why each note went where it did. Leave room for a group called "not sure yet," and notice which pile ends up the biggest.

Talk about it while you color

  • Why do you think Subby has a heart on its tummy screen?
  • If you had a robot helper, what would you ask it to help you with?
  • What do you think Subby's beeps and boops sound like when it is happy?
