The research skill

Labeling samples is the skill Detail Dog is practicing, and the words on his jars, Red and Blue, are the quiet heroes of the picture. A label tells everyone, including your future self, exactly what belongs where, so samples never get mixed up or lost. In Chapter 4, setting up a system like this before collecting anything is part of planning a good experiment. Scientists label test tubes, rock collections, and seed packets for the same reason, and your child will sort and label objects in school long before calling it data.

Try it at home

Gather a small bowl of mixed items, such as buttons, dry pasta shapes, or crayons (with an adult for anything small enough to swallow). Give your child two or three cups and a strip of paper for each. Let them choose the sorting rule, then write or draw a label for every cup, just like Detail Dog's jars. When the bowl is empty, count each cup and ask which group has the most. Finish by mixing everything and letting someone else sort it again using only the labels.
