After meeting each friend one by one, the story pulls the camera way back. Suddenly the squad looks tiny beneath towering mountains and a sky full of stars, and that feeling of smallness is exactly the point. Wonder often begins when we realize how much there is that we do not know yet. This page invites children to feel awe rather than answers, which is the emotional spark that the first chapter is built around. It is also a wonderfully open canvas for coloring, with skies that can be any color a child dreams up.
The research skill
Under a sky packed with stars, constellations, and a crescent moon, four tiny friends simply look up. The skill here is open observation: watching something large and changing without knowing yet what you are looking for. It is how many research projects begin, with a long look that raises more questions than answers. The constellation lines also show an old research habit, finding patterns in a scatter of points. Later your child will meet this in moon journals, weather charts, and any lesson that asks, "What changed since last time?"
Try it at home
On a clear evening, step outside or look out a window with your child for ten minutes. Ask them to draw what they see in the sky on a sheet of paper: the moon's shape, any bright stars, and where they are compared to a rooftop or tree. Write the date on the drawing. A few nights later, repeat the drawing from the same spot and lay the two side by side. Talk about what stayed the same, what moved, and what questions the difference brings up.
