The research skill

Among the smiling flowers and the tree with a face, a key, a feather, a swirled rock, a bone, and a coin are tucked into the scenery. Finding them all takes systematic searching: scanning a busy scene section by section instead of letting your eyes jump around. Curious Bunny's magnifying glass hints at the method. Researchers search the same way when they check every row of a data table or every square of a field site. In school, it helps with word searches, proofreading, and finding answers in a text.

Try it at home

Hide five small household objects in one room while your child waits outside, perhaps a spoon, a sock, a toy car, a crayon, and a hair clip. (For young children, skip anything small enough to be a choking hazard.) Before they search, help them split the room into zones: the floor, the couch, the shelves, the table. They search one zone completely before moving to the next. Afterward, swap roles and let your child hide the objects. Talk about whether searching zone by zone was faster than looking everywhere at once.
