Field Work
"Field work means going outside to watch."
The Squad in safari gear hiding in tall grass, watching a snail race.
About this page
Chapter 4 sends the Squad out of the library and into the wild, and page 51 is where their planning finally meets the real world. Dressed for adventure, they stay low, quiet, and patient so the snails behave exactly as snails do when nobody bothers them. That is the heart of field work, watching carefully without changing what you see. It is also a lovely reminder that research can be a fully screen-free STEM adventure, needing nothing more than curiosity, stillness, and a good hiding spot. Slowness turns out to be a superpower here.
Talk about it while you color
- Why do you think the Squad is hiding instead of walking right up to the snails?
- What animals could you watch quietly in your backyard or at the park?
- Which snail do you think will win the race, and what makes you say so?
