Chapter 5: Counting the Treasure

Venn Diagram

"Where do they overlap?"

Two overlapping hoola-hoops. Curious Cat is in one, Detail Dog in the other, Subby is in the middle overlap.

About this page

Two hula hoops overlap on the ground, and the Squad turns themselves into a living Venn diagram. Curious Cat claims one hoop, Detail Dog the other, and Subby stands proudly in the middle where the two circles share space. That overlap is the whole lesson: some things belong to one group, some to another, and some belong to both at once. It is sorting with a twist, and it rewards careful looking, which is the spirit running through Chapter 5, Counting the Treasure. You can recreate this page on the living room floor with two loops of string and a pile of toys.

Talk about it while you color

  • Why do you think Subby gets to stand in the middle where the hoops overlap?
  • If one hoop held furry animals and the other held swimmers, where would a duck go?
  • What do you and your best friend both love that could go in your overlap?
