The research skill
Detail Dog is marking the paper in red while Curious Bunny holds it steady. That is editing: a second reader finds unclear sentences, missing words, and mistakes the writer could not see, because writers tend to read what they meant rather than what they wrote. In Chapter 6, editing is the step between a first draft and a finished report. The skill has two halves, giving specific notes and receiving them calmly. Your child will practice both in classroom partner edits, and researchers do the same with co-authors.
Try it at home
Play editor with a silly note. Write a short message with three planted mistakes, such as "The dog says moo. We ate lunch at midnight. The sun is purple." Read it together and give your child a red crayon to circle each thing that is not right, then suggest a fix for each circle. Next, swap: they dictate a sentence, you write it with one mistake on purpose, and they catch it. Keep the tone playful, so fixing feels like helping.
