Chapter 6: Telling the Story

The Printing Press

"Hot off the press."

Giant rollers printing the book.

About this page

Giant rollers turn, ink flows, and the squad's story becomes a real printed book. There is something thrilling about big machinery on a coloring page, and here the machine is doing the most magical job of all, multiplying an idea so many people can hold it. As Chapter 6 nears its finale, children see that publishing is a physical, touchable thing, words made into objects. It is also a quiet nod to every book they have ever opened, since each one rolled off a press just like this, once upon a time.

Talk about it while you color

  • What sounds do you think this big printing machine makes?
  • How many copies of the book do you think it will print?
  • If you could print your very own book, what would it be about?
