Words like "literature review" and "data analysis" mean nothing to a five-year-old, but a wise owl who loves books and a beagle who counts everything make sense right away. I gave each research skill a character so your child can remember the skill by remembering a friend. When your child later asks "What would Detail Dog do?", they're really asking "How should I check this?"
Each character carries one skill
- Curious Bunny is asking questions and observing.
- Professor Hoot is learning what others already discovered.
- Subby the Robot is organizing ideas and using tools well.
- Detail Dog is counting, sorting, and checking.
Because each one has a clear personality, your child starts to recognize those kinds of thinking in themselves. You can meet all four on the characters page.
Characters make hard moments safer
Some research ideas can feel uncomfortable, like being wrong or having your work corrected. A character can go through that first. On page 86, The Editor, Detail Dog crosses things out with a red pen while Curious Bunny bravely holds up the draft. Your child can talk about how Bunny feels without it being about their own drawing. On page 77, Professor Hoot smiles at a result that says "No," which shows a grown-up reaction to disappointment that kids can borrow.
Characters give you a script
When you don't know what to say, the characters can say it for you:
- "Curious Bunny would ask why. What do you wonder about this?"
- "What would Professor Hoot look up first?"
- "How would Detail Dog count these?"
It keeps the conversation playful, and it puts your child in the role of the researcher instead of the student.
Research is a team
