Mostly, and I try to be honest about where it falls short. The site aims to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at Level AA, and it is currently partially conformant: most of the site meets the standard, and the parts that don't yet are listed in my accessibility statement.
What works today
- Keyboard navigation. Every link and button can be reached and used with a keyboard, with visible focus outlines.
- A skip link that appears when focused, so you can jump past the menu to the content.
- Screen reader support. Pages use proper headings and landmarks, and the online book reader announces page changes as you flip.
- Alt text for the artwork. All 100 coloring pages are described by what the artwork actually shows. For example, page 2 is described as a fluffy bunny with big round glasses holding a magnifying glass, looking at a ladybug.
- Readable contrast. All text, links, and buttons meet the AA contrast requirement.
- Works on any screen size, reflowing without sideways scrolling.
Known limits
- The preferred source dialog. On blog articles, a dialog can open on its own after about twenty seconds of reading and move keyboard focus. Press Escape to dismiss it, and it won't come back for thirty days.
- The page-flip reader needs JavaScript. Without it, the book page shows a gallery of all the pages instead, so the whole book is still available.
Tips for families
- In the book reader, you can turn pages with the arrow buttons, the keyboard arrow keys, or a swipe on touch screens.
- Each coloring page also has its own address with its story text, scene description, and "Talk about it while you color" questions as regular text on the page.
