This whimsical contraption turns the most important sentence in science into something kids can see. A seed goes into the IF funnel, a smiling flower comes out of the THEN funnel, and suddenly if-then thinking has gears and levers. That simple frame, if I do this, then that will happen, is how researchers of every age state a hypothesis clearly enough to test it. Practicing the pattern out loud while coloring builds the habit long before any classroom asks for it, which is exactly the approach behind this kids' hypothesis coloring book. Try inventing a few silly if-then machines of your own as you color.

The research skill

In the artwork, a seed drops into the IF funnel and a smiling flower pops out of the THEN funnel. That layout teaches research vocabulary without the jargon: the IF side is the thing you change, and the THEN side is the result you watch for. Naming both parts is what makes a hypothesis testable, a key step in Chapter 3. In later science classes these become the independent and dependent variables, and children who already think in inputs and outputs have a head start on those terms.

Try it at home

Turn two paper cups into a pretend if-then machine and take turns feeding it everyday inputs. Say the full sentence out loud before you check each one:

1. If we drop a plastic spoon on the floor, then it will...
2. If we blow on a tissue, then it will...
3. If we set a toy car on a tilted book, then it will...
4. If we clap in the bathroom, then it will...

Each round, your child practices naming the IF and predicting the THEN before seeing what really happens.
