Chapter 3

The Great Guess

Brainstorming, prediction, and forming a thesis statement

Chapter 3 is where a wondering child becomes a thinking scientist. Across pages 26 through 40, the friends take everything they learned in the library and turn it into a testable idea. This is the chapter that gives the book its name: the little thesis is the great guess your child learns to make.

The pages walk through the thinking step by step. A brainstorm storm fills the sky with ideas, thinking caps go on, the lightbulb flickers to life, and the friends build an If... Then... Machine that turns wishes into predictions. Kids also meet the honest side of science here, including the Null, the friendly reminder that finding out you were wrong still counts as finding out. That difference between a guess and a hypothesis is one of the most valuable thinking tools a child can learn, and it is why wrong answers are celebrated rather than feared in this book.

While your child colors these pages, try the pattern out loud: "If we water one plant more than the other, then what do you think happens?" Once kids get the if-then rhythm, they start using it everywhere, and that is exactly the point.
