After the storm of ideas, the story slows down at a crossroads. Two signs, two possible answers, and no way to know yet which one is right. This page introduces a quietly powerful research habit, holding more than one possible explanation at the same time. Kids often feel pressure to pick the correct answer instantly, but scientists sit with competing guesses and then design a test to choose between them. That is what separates a guess from a hypothesis, the willingness to put it on a signpost and check. Let your child argue for one path, then the other.
The research skill
A bunny stands where the path splits, with one sign for Hypothesis A and one for Hypothesis B. The skill is comparing rival explanations by asking: what would I expect to see if A were true, and what if B were true? When the two predictions look different, a single test can choose between them. This Chapter 3 habit keeps researchers from settling on the first explanation they happen to like. Older students meet it when they write two possible answers to a question and weigh the evidence for each.
Try it at home
Play a two-path mystery. While your child covers their eyes, hide a favorite toy in one of two places. Offer Hypothesis A ("It is under a cushion") and Hypothesis B ("It is behind a door"). Before anyone looks, ask what clue would point to each path: a lumpy cushion, or a door left open a crack? Let your child check one clue at a time and then pick a path, like the bunny at the signpost. Swap roles so your child hides the toy and you reason out loud.
