Can I use The Little Thesis for a one-week homeschool unit?

Yes. The six chapters fit into a single school week if you pair Chapters 3 and 4 on the same day, and by Friday your child will have finished a small research project of their own. I wrote out the full day-by-day version in A Sample Homeschool Week With The Little Thesis. Here is the short form you can copy into your planner.

The five-day plan

  • Monday, Chapter 1 (about 45 minutes). Color the opening pages while you read aloud. Take a short curiosity walk and note five things your child notices. End by choosing one question for the week.
  • Tuesday, Chapter 2 (about 45 minutes). Color, then find two or three facts about the question at the library or in books at home. Make a "What We Learned" page in your child's own words.
  • Wednesday, Chapter 3 and Chapter 4 (about 60 minutes). Write a prediction with the frame "I think ___ because ___." Then make a materials list and numbered steps, and gather everything for tomorrow.
  • Thursday, Chapter 5 (60 to 90 minutes). Run the experiment and record what happens with drawings, tally marks, or measurements. Color while things settle, then make a simple hand-drawn bar chart.
  • Friday, Chapter 6 (about 45 minutes). Color the closing pages, make a one-page poster (question, prediction, what happened, what we learned), and present it to anyone willing to listen. A stuffed-animal audience counts.

What you need

Crayons or colored pencils, a notebook, and whatever household items the experiment calls for. You don't need to color all 100 pages in one week. Pick a few pages from each chapter's grid and save the rest for later.

If the week gets away from you

Stretch it to two weeks. Nothing breaks if Thursday's experiment runs into Monday. If your child finishes the experiment early, ask "What happens if we change one thing?" and you have the start of a second one.

If you'd rather go slower and deeper, see How do I plan a six-week research unit?
